EXCERPTS
“When you first came to school, you wouldn’t speak a word to me, now…..all this. What changed?”
For one self depreciating second I was afraid to hear
the answer. Maybe the Declan I thought I knew was nothing like the real Declan.
Was it possible he had already slept his way through the popular girls and finally moved his way down to me? The panic bit at me threatening to break free.
“I was scared to death of ya woman.” He
chuckled, grinning sheepishly at me.
“You’re kidding right? Scared of me? You have every girl in school eating out of your hand and you’re scared of me?”
“Them other girls don’t take my breath away Cassie. You do.”
He blushed and my heart nearly exploded. I felt like it all had to be a dream, it
was too wonderful to be real.
“When do I take your breath away?”
“The first second I saw ya. And it scared the hell outta me. Inside that school, in
front of those shallow, giggly girls I could be anyone. You saw the real me
falling outta my Da’s broken down car as he drove about town drunk beyond
belief.I couldn’t hide from you and I found you were the only person in the
whole place I wanted to hide the truth from.”
“Why?”
“Because you were the only lass in the building that made my heart race. You’re beautiful and
sweet and ya don’t even know it. There were so many times in class I wanted to
reach over and hold your hand. I would see ya freakin out next to me and I
wanted nothing more than to just hold ya, but I didn’t know what you would
say.”
I sat silently for a moment absorbing his words, letting them fill the
cracks my parents left in me. The restaurant bustle melted away and it was just
the two of us, and for the first time I saw Declan completely. He wasn’t some
untouchable demigod; he was just a boy, a broken boy who needed someone to love
him just as much as I needed someone.
“Stupid.”
He looked shocked at
first. Then a smile broke out across his gorgeous full lips.
